Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Comedy about marriage, divorce and children, concentrating
on the lives of three couples from different backgrounds and age groups. Cybill Shepherd,
Ron Silver, Beau Bridges, Stockard Channing, Mary Stuart Masterson and Robert Sean Leonard
star.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - There are two love making scenes: Shepherd and Silver are
being affectionate in the shower, but no nudity is visible. Bridges and Channing are in
bed, being overly vigorous and noisy; still, there is no nudity. There's some cleavage
here and there, lots of explicit sexual talk and sexual gesturing and some romantic
kissing.
VIOLENCE/GORE 0 - Nothing. (Unless you consider a kid picking his nose to be
gory).
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 7 - At least 25 F-words, with the majority uttered during a tirade
by Masterson. Also a lot of other profanities -- mainly anatomical and scatological
references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Divorce and how it affects children, drugs, sexual
promiscuity. There's one scene of a teenager getting very drunk.
MESSAGE - It's worth working at perfecting a relationship, rather than
throwing in the towel at the first sign of trouble. The value of friendship is
inestimable. Children are happiness.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
