Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
The Musketeers attempt to overthrow their tyrannical king
(Leonardo DiCaprio) and install his twin brother (also DiCaprio) who is imprisoned.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - A man's naked buttocks are seen four times. A couple of
scenes with a naked couple in bed obviously after sex but no nudity is seen. A couple of
scenes where moaning and sexual noises are heard (in one we see movement under hay and
then one man and three women come out from the stack). We see a bit of the side of a
woman's breast while a couple lies in bed. A man starts to undress a woman. Several
scantily clad women and some kissing (once with a naked couple lying in bed pre-sex,
although no nudity is seen). Sexual innuendo.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - Rioting, chases, scuffles and people are beaten by a
crowd. A sword skewers a man and then he's stabbed with a spot of blood. There are several
sword fights and stabbings, although not with much blood. Sometimes people die as a result
(blood is seen on knives and swords). We see blood on a man's chest, a sword is pulled out
of a man's chest, a throat is slit (with blood), a cheek is split (with blood), and we see
blood coming out of a victim's mouth. There are stabbings in the stomach and a man is
stabbed in the back and killed. A man is killed by cannon fire. Sometimes people are shot
at. People are beaten with objects in a few scenes. A man tries to hang himself. A man is
thrown into a stone wall and water. A couple of fistfights with punching, throwing each
other around, etc. A man is choked. Skeletons are seen in a tomb and a dead, hanging
corpse. Diseased and shackled prisoners are seen. A disfigured ear. A few face slaps, some
face punches, lots of threatening with knives and swords. Some threatening with guns.

PROFANITY 3 - A few scatological references, a couple of anatomical
references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - French pre-revolutionary history, royalty and loyalty,
political schemes and state secrets.
MESSAGE - Justice is more important than your duty to the state.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
