Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
A girl discovers a friendly monster under a lake. The beast
causes her father to become more attentive toward her and her brother.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A man is seen bare-chested, and there's some romantic talk.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man suffers a bump on the head and later there is some
blood on his bandage. Bad guys try to kill the monster (via toxin dumping). The monster
has a bloody wound on his back (and the girl gets some blood on her hands). A couple of
people fall into the water screaming, a couple of kids are scared by the monster, the girl
falls screaming down a cliff, and three kids are caught underwater in a tank-device and
are scared as water fills it.

PROFANITY 3 - Several scatological references, and a handful of mild
obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Magic, psychiatry, divorce.
MESSAGE - Parents should pay attention to their kids. Grown-ups need to
reconnect with their "inner child."
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
