Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
A not-so-famous any longer American
movie star (Bill Murray) travels to Tokyo to shoot whiskey
commercials. While there he meets a young woman (Scarlett Johansson)
who has traveled to Tokyo with her photographer husband. A
friendship blossoms between them, and together they try to find out
who they are and why they are where they are in their lives. Also
with Anna Faris and Giovanni Ribisi. Directed by Sofia Coppola. [1:45]
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Women dance topless and with tiny
thongs (we see bare breasts and bare buttocks) in a nightclub, men
watch and give them money. A woman goes into a man's hotel room,
asks him if he wants a massage, he declines, she lifts her leg to
show him her stocking tops, she tells him to rip her stockings, and
she falls on the floor kicking her legs in the air (we see her bare
thighs and panties); he continues to resist her. An older man and a
young woman kiss and hug, and a man and a woman kiss a few times. An
older man and young woman kiss on the cheek a few times. A man wakes
up and is shocked to find out there's a woman in his room (they
apparently had sex). A man and a woman lie in bed together (he's
bare-chested and she wears a T-shirt and panties). An older man and
a young woman lie in bed together clothed, they talk, he touches her
bare foot tenderly and they sleep. An older man carries a young
woman to her hotel room and puts her in bed. An older man and a
young woman hold hands and hug. A woman lies in bed on her side
wearing a shirt and sheer panties (we see her buttock cleavage and
bare legs). A man takes a shower and we see his bare chest, a man
changes his shirt and we see his bare chest, a man is bare-chested
when wearing swim trunks, and a man sits in a bath tub (we see his
bare chest and distorted flesh tones through the water). Men sit in
a sauna bare-chested, and women wear bandeau swimsuits. A woman on a
poster wears a low-cut outfit that reveals cleavage. A comic book
page has a stylized nude woman with bare breasts.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man throws something at a barman,
who pulls a weapon and begins firing at the man and his companions:
we see flashes being emitted from the gun but we do not see or hear
any bullets striking (it is therefore uncertain whether it is a real
gun). A woman's toe is bruised and bandaged. We hear about a man
being a prisoner of war and being tortured. People talk about other
people suffering from anorexia nervosa. A man gets stuck on a cross
country training machine going really fast.

term, 3 anatomical terms, 1 mild obscenity, 2 religious
exclamations. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mid-life crises, marriage, love,
friendship, Japanese culture vs. American culture, loneliness,
disconnection, strained marital relationships, infidelity.
MESSAGE - New friendships can help define what's
really important in life.
(Note: People drink alcohol and smoke in many scenes.)
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
