Neil Simon tale about two boys (Brad Stoll and Mike Damus)
who are temporarily living with their stern grandmother (Irene Worth) and slightly
retarded aunt (Mercedes Ruehl). Also with David Strathairn.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - A woman and her boyfriend kiss a few times while rolling on
the grass and the man continues to kiss her even after she tells him to stop. There are a
couple of implicit sexual references about a boy's anatomy and a woman's libido.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A woman brandishes her walking cane at another woman, but
doesn't hit her; a few scenes of people yelling at each other and crying; a man slaps a
boy across the face, and points a gun at him.
PROFANITY 1 - No profanity, just some very mild cussing and a couple of
references to courage as a part of the male anatomy. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mental retardation, emotional abuse of children, stealing,
wanting something you can't have, separating from your parents.
MESSAGE - No one can tell you how to live your life, not even your parents.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
