Ariel, a mermaid, falls in love with a prince and wants to
exchange her tail with legs so she can join him in the world of humans.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A kiss. The mermaid's midriff is exposed.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A shark snaps and chomps as it chases Ariel and her
fish-friend Flounder. There are a few frightening scenes with the sea witch: she grows to
monstrous size and towers over Ariel and the Prince threatening them. She also zaps a
merman and shrinks him to a withering glob. A storm throws a ship onto rocks. A scary
scene with a ship on fire; a dog is trapped and then a man is caught onboard when the ship
blows up. A cook chases a crab trying to kill him.
PROFANITY 1 - A couple of fishy insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Love, being different.
MESSAGE - As a parent you must trust your children to know what they want.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
