Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Steve Martin is a fake faith healer preying on the praying
faithful by being part circus clown and part hi-tech sleuth. When he gets stuck in a
dried-up Kansas hamlet, he puts on a good show until a real miracle occurs.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Comments insinuating sexual relationships ("she wants
me" and "you need a man") and wanting sex. One scene where a man is shown
in a towel, bare-chested, and a woman is shown in a pajama top, after presumably having
had sex. One romantic kiss.
VIOLENCE/GORE 0 - None.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 4 - Lots of scatological references and some references to male
genitalia. Sexually explicit hand gestures. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Religion and faith vs. fake prophets, the possibility of
actual miracles, greed, pre-marital sex, redemption.
MESSAGE - God works in mysterious ways, and He, probably, does exist. Faith
shall be rewarded.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
