MPAA Rating: R

Nick Broomfield's documentary investigates the rumors surrounding the death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, as well as his relationship with rocker/actor Courtney Love.

SEX/NUDITY 5 - Some sexual innuendo. A clip from a music video shows several topless women dancing and the backside of a woman wearing thong underwear; we also see a few women wearing cleavage-revealing tops.

VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A man purposely throws a microphone into a crowd and we hear it hit someone; the man also kicks at several people. We hear a few verbal threats of violence and discussions about contract killing.

PROFANITY 7 - About 27 F-words (some are written in a letter we see on screen), many anatomical references and several mild obscenities and insults. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Death, suicide, drug use, fame, dysfunctional relationships, conspiracy theories, investigative journalism.

MESSAGE - Fame doesn't bring happiness; in fact, it can make you more miserable than you already are.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
