"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

Jonah Hex | 2009 | PG-13 | - 4.7.4

Based on the popular DC Comic line, a Confederate soldier turned bounty hunter (Josh Brolin) is offered his freedom in exchange for stopping a rogue soldier from destroying the United States. His ability to temporarily reanimate and talk to the dead, comes in useful. Megan Fox co-stars as a prostitute. Also with John Malkovich, and Will Arnett. Directed by Jimmy Hayward. [1:21]

SEX/NUDITY 4 - A man and a woman are seen lying side-by-side in bed (the man's bare chest is visible); the woman kisses the man's chest, straddles him and they are seen the next morning, lying in bed, nude and wrapped in a sheet (the woman's bare back is visible momentarily), implying they had sex.
The bare chest of a man is seen as he lies on a table. Two shirtless men are seen wrestling. A woman wears a very fitted, cleavage-exposing corset. A woman rips a portion of her skirt open, exposing her upper thigh. Women wear cleavage-exposing dresses.
A woman is handed money as she gets dressed, implying that she is a prostitute (we only see her pull on her stockings and attach her skirt around her waist).
When soldiers knock down her door, a man jokes that a woman, who is a prostitute, has a lot of business. A man makes a remark about men checking a woman's body carefully for weapons, and the woman suggests that she was checked closely because of her appearance.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A scene that is seen multiple times depicts a man being tied to a large wooden X and forced to watch as a group of bandits tie up a child and a woman in a house and set the house on fire; another man uses a cow brand to scar the man's face while telling him that he is avenging someone's murder.
After a crowd of about 20 men shoot at a man, he successfully shoots most of them, he is shot in the chest, and shoots a box of dynamite; the lit dynamite is thrown at him as he escapes on horseback, and we later see him falling off his horse and landing in a meadow -- he appears to be dead and his body is dragged away but he recuperates.
A group of five men open fire on a man on horseback, and he fires back killing all of them (we do not see any blood); when other men fire at the man and strike an innocent bystander, the man fires back and kills three more men, one point-blank in the face (no blood seen), and then fires a shot into an oil lamp, which quickly explodes and sends up flames. A man shoots approximately 20 men with exploding bullets and they are seen falling to the ground on fire.
A man and a woman shoot approximately 25 men, the men are seen laying on the ground (no blood is visible), presumably dead and the woman is seen taking objects from the dead bodies. Two men walk over the bodies of several dead men, they tell an older man they had killed all of them, except for one man, who begs the older man for his life but is shot point-blank (no blood visible).
During a short animated portion, we see a body hanging from a noose, a building is engulfed in flames with its occupants inside, a man is seen shooting multiple people (no blood is visible), a man is seen with a large scar being burned onto his face, and a man shoots another man in the head (we see the bullet hole in the middle of the man's forehead, and black blood drips from it).
After a violent struggle between two men, one of them shoves the other into a piece of machinery that appears to slice open his neck, and blood pools around his head as he lays on the ground dead; the first man then touches the dead man's face, which turns into fiery ashes, and the man punches the ashes, causing the dead man's head to explode into a ball of ash.
A man attempts to choke a woman, she struggles, he fires a gun at her and misses, and she stabs him in the stomach (no blood is seen).
In one scene, which is seen multiple times, two men are seen wrestling, pinning each other and striking one another with an axe and a cane; during one showing of the scene, one of the men fires a shot directly into the other man's head and the man falls to the ground dead (no blood is visible). A man shoots a man at a very close range, sending him crashing through a window.
Men on horseback board a train and blow it up; men are later shown investigating the scene of the explosion, and bodies are seen lying on the ground (no blood is visible, and the bodies appear to be covered in soot); a man attempts to stand up and is shot, and a man instructs a group of men to bury two of the bodies and burn the others.
A crazed-looking man is led into the center of a tent, his neck in shackles, and he is released: he leaps at another man, they wrestle in a pit as a large crowd of men and women watch for entertainment, one of them opens his mouth as if to bite the other when he is pinned down, and moments later a third man is thrown into the pit; the crazed man attacks him and the tent is seen engulfed in flames, presumably killing all of the occupants.
Men engage in hand-to-hand combat on multiple occasions, including two men who wrestle in a cemetery, and two men who wrestle and punch each other on the deck of a large boat and also hit each other with a cane: the fight ends when one of the men straddles the other, holds an axe against his neck, and grabs him and shoves him into a the boat's machinery, causing an explosion that presumably kills everyone on board (except from a man and a woman who jump into the water).
A man with a freshly branded and scarred face is seen lifting a heated axe to his cheek, we hear a cry but do not see what happens; later he is seen with a large scar on his cheek and a piece of scar tissue over a portion of his mouth. Dead bodies in various states of decay are seen: One body is gray until a man touches it, temporarily reviving it, until the face smolders and burns and the corpse is returned to its original gray state. A man drags three dead bodies behind his horse, and he then throws a bloody bag with what is implied to be a severed head to a man who opens the bag and winces. A man is seen digging up a grave, he opens the casket, and we see a partially decayed. A series of men are seen laid out in caskets and a man who appears to be dead is carried away on a stretcher. A man screams in pain as a person pours liquid over his bullet-pocked chest; the man is later seen with a large crow flying from his mouth and he appears unharmed.
Six cannonballs are fired from a battleship onto the deck of another ship, they detonate, and the ship explodes into flames, presumably killing the occupants. We see six large cannon balls fired into a city square, and the city explodes into a massive fireball, leaving nothing behind; two men later discuss how the explosion had killed over 300 people. Cannonballs are seen being fired from a battleship and hitting a building, as people run to avoid being struck; one of the cannonballs hits a monument and another destroys a buggy, but no one appears to be injured.
Three men poke a dog with sticks, another man knocks out two of them with a quick punch and the third man is attacked by the dog and falls to the ground. The silhouette of a man is seen, as he appears to break the necks of two men and drop them to the ground.
On multiple occasions, men are seen kneeling on the ground in front of soldiers, guns held to their heads and on one occasion the scene ends with the sounds of gunfire (no shooting is seen). Soldiers are seen on horseback, shooting people; two men fall from a bridge after being shot and soldiers carrying guns rush into an encampment and grab men.
A man holds a knife to a woman's throat, she fights back and twists the man's arm, the man punches her in the face, she falls on a bed, and the man scoops her up and carries her out of the room.
A man sitting on an electric pole is seen being zapped by electricity; he falls to the ground and yelps, but is unharmed.
A woman and multiple men are seen with guns held to their heads. A man and a woman are seen with their arms over their heads, handcuffed to a chain and the woman escapes and frees the man.
Two men discuss the deadliness of weapons. A man asks a woman where her guns and knives have gone and she explains that they were taken. On multiple occasions men discuss the creation of a weapon that would "destroy a nation."

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
