Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Tom Cruise is sports agent Jerry Maguire who gets an attack
of conscience and must then put his money where his mouth is.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Sexual innuendo, kissing. Cruise kisses Renee Zellweger's
shoulder and chest and moves down her clothed body, while putting his hand on her chest. A
few male bare buttocks in locker rooms, and a few shots of apparent frontal male nudity
(but they're in shadow so nothing is clearly seen). Cruise and Kelly Preston sit naked
talking at a table but arms and legs are strategically placed so nothing is seen. Preston
and Cruise have sex complete with thrusting and moaning. The sides of her breasts are
visible. Cruise and Zellweger have sex but we only see them kissing with him on top of
her.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Pratfalls, pummeling, sports-related injuries. Preston
punches and kicks Cruise and he later sports a bruised/cut eye.

PROFANITY 7 - 15+ F-words (a few times said by children) and an obscene
gesture, many scatological references, a few anatomical references and a few milder
obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sports agent work and sports, losing your job, integrity.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
