Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt star as vampires trying to come to
terms with their nasty natures.
SEX/NUDITY 9 - The sex scenes involve a man who passionately kisses a couple
of women and a man who is shown on top of a woman (both clothed), sucking her neck and
thrusting his hips as she wraps her legs around him. There's a lot of nudity -- heaving
bosoms are plentiful -- and a couple of scenes of total frontal nudity (there's a
lingering shot of a completely nude woman).
VIOLENCE/GORE 9 - Many shots of bloody fang-marks, as well as bloody fangs.
Necks and wrists are shown being punctured with a metal hook (shown in close-up). A
vampire drains the blood from many rats, another breaks a rat's neck and drains the blood
into a goblet. A vampire's throat is slit and an ugly gash is shown along with a puddle of
blood. Numerous vampires are set on fire (one is shown with charred skin), decapitated,
and cut in half. A young female vampire is burned by the sun. A plague victim is shown
with sores on the face and hands. A decayed corpse is shown.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
