Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Gary Oldman stars as Ludwig Van Beethoven in this story of
his life and loves.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - A woman is shown being bathed by her servants with a thin
camisole on and her breasts are clearly seen, but briefly. A woman's breasts are briefly
seen from the side, and another from the front. Many passionate kissing scenes, with
participants lightly covered with sheets. A man's buttocks are seen. A man is shown
kissing a woman and trying to force sex on her. A woman is raped (see Violence/Gore).
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - A man hits a boy across the face numerous times, very
viciously. A man tries to shoot himself causing a bloody gash across his forehead. There
are many scenes of yelling and Beethoven's cruelty towards his relatives. A father
threatens to beat his son and chases after him. A group of boys taunt Beethoven and kick
him. A rape scene leaves the victim with a bloody neck from a knife. A brief war scene
where a fiery explosion kills a child.

PROFANITY 3 - One scatological term, a few mild obscenities, and some
insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Being a genius, coping with old age.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
