Love triumphs over hatred in this adaptation of Isabel
Allende's novel. With Meryl Streep, Jeremy Irons and Winona Ryder.
SEX/NUDITY 7 - A man rapes a girl (we see him pull down her blouse). We see
entwined bodies as a woman watches a couple making love. The nude body of a dead woman is
shown, and the nude bodies of a man and a woman are seen from afar. A man sexually
tortures a woman.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A woman is cut open during an autopsy, and a woman is
tortured until she is bloody. A man is lashed.
PROFANITY 0 - None. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Mysticism and the supernatural. Rape and torture.
MESSAGE - Love transcends all strife.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
