Bruce Willis stars as a police hostage negotiator who's wracked by guilt from having failed on his last case -- a man holding his wife and young son hostage ended up shooting them both and himself. In order to try to forget his past he moves to a small, serene California town, but when a couple of young men try to steal the car of a mobster (Kevin Pollak), his hostage negotiating skills are put again to the test. Also with Jimmy Bennett, Jimmy Pinchak and Jonathan Tucker. Directed by Florent Emilio Siri. [1:42]

SEX/NUDITY 3 - A young man makes a sexual gesture with his hand and mouth toward a teenage girl. A young man blows marijuana smoke in a teenage girl's face and rests his head on her chest (she is bound). A young man admires a teenage girl and tells her he likes her top.
A teenage girl wears a low-cut and short top that reveals cleavage, bare abdomen and bare lower back. Three male police officers are shown bare-chested and wearing their boxer shorts.
There seems to be a perpetual sense of threat that a forced sexual situation is imminent.

VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - We hear several gunshots and see flashes of light, then we see a man dead on the floor with smearing and splattering of blood on the wall behind him, and we see a bound and gagged woman who has been shot to death (there are splatters of blood on the wall behind her) and a young boy who has a very bloody neck wound (blood gushes from the wound and then the boy falls still); a man holds the boy and we see his very bloody hands.
A young man is shot, we see organic matter and blood spurt from the wound, and he slumps over dead. A police officer is shot twice in the chest (we see matter and blood spurt and we see the bloody holes in the uniform).
A young man pushes another young man over a balcony, we see the young man hit the floor below hard and we see blood on his nose and it pools around the back of his head; he then gasps and dies.
A boy holds a gun on a young man, the young man shoves the boy, a teenage girl stabs the young man in the face, he screams and pulls the knife out (we see the knife in his face, a lot of blood on his face, and hear a squishing sound when he pulls the knife out).
A man holds a gun to another man's head, a man shoots a man in the head, a firefight ensues and several other men are shot (we see blood spurting), and one man is shot several more times, and we see a lot of blood pooled around bodies on the floor. A boy's hand is bloody from being cut by glass. A man finds his dog dead (we see it with blood on its neck and mouth).
A house is set on fire, flames burn in a room where two men are trapped and we see them catch on fire; while the house begins to crumble, a man shoots a young man, a man is shot in the side (we see his bloody wound later), a man is hit with a Molotov cocktail and then shot, and a young man throws a couple of Molotov cocktails and we see him engulfed in flames. A car is driven through a large iron gate and Molotov cocktails are thrown at it, setting it ablaze.
A surveillance tape is played and we see a young man shooting a man and then watching him die while the man pleads for help. A wounded police officer pulls herself along the ground, a car approaches, the driver pulls the officer into the car, and the officer then gasps and dies.
A young man hits a man on the head with a gun butt several times (we see the man lying unconscious on the floor) while his children watch and scream (we see the man later with blood on his forehead and face). A young man slams a teenage girl against a rock wall and holds her around the throat (she gags and gasps). A man hits a young boy across the face with a telephone receiver. A young man punches another young man in the face, then pulls off his belt threatening to hit him with it.
A teenage girl kicks a young man, he tries to grab her, and she and a boy run, scampering through air vents; the young man chases them, they climb out into a room, the young man grabs the teenage girl's foot and tries to pull her back inside the vent but they get away and hide in a room with bulletproof glass while the young man on the other side tries to shoot the glass. A young man ties a teenage girl's hands and feet to bed posts, and while doing so he pushes her foot down using the blade of a knife (it does not appear to cut her). Police officers shoot out surveillance cameras. A man drives while being held at gunpoint, he stops the car, he is handcuffed to the steering wheel, and two other men hold him: a van door is opened to show the man that his wife and daughter are bound and gagged, and he struggles while the hostages scream.
A man inside a house surrounded by armed police has a gun and holds a woman and young boy hostage. A police sniper takes aim at a man inside a house. A young man points a gun at a man and pretends to shoot him. A man gets into his car and feels a gun pressed into his ribs by someone in the back seat. A young man holds a gun to a teenage girl's head. A young man shoots at police in cars approaching a house. Two young men break into a house, one grabs a teenage girl and holds her over the mouth and holds a gun on her, while a young boy screams.
A man tells another man "I will cut your daughter's heart out." We hear that a young man's father killed his mother and then killed himself.
A man slaps an unconscious man in the face and yells at him. We see a young woman and a woman bound and with bags over their heads while being held captive. A boy and a teenage girl are tied together on a bed.
We hear a man yelling inside a house. Police officers yell at each other during a tense moment. Three young men yell at each other. A teenage girl yells at her mother and father.
There seems to be a perpetual sense of threat that a forced sexual situation is imminent.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
