ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

Gangsters battle for turf in this 1930s crime drama.
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Several women skinny dip and we see total nudity (from front
and rear). Implied oral sex (woman performing on man). A couple is shown in bed together
obviously after sex although nothing is seen. Sexual innuendo.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - Many people are shot and knifed (sometimes in shoot-outs)
with lots of blood (on bodies, in bullet holes, around corpses, coming out of mouths). A
severed, bloody finger and severed testicles. A stabbing with pick axes. A couple of
throats are slit. A man is hung up, he's very bloody and later his corpse is held up on a
wall. Bodies are thrown out of cars. Many people are beaten up (punching, kicking, hitting
with objects). Explosions.
PROFANITY 8 - About 60 F-words, many scatological references, many
anatomical references, many mild obscenities, many racial slurs (which African-Americans
use in reference to other African-Americans and whites referring to African-Americans). [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Gangsters, depression, race relations.
MESSAGE - Even bad guys can have some good qualities.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
