Kathy Bates stars as a factory worker who, wanting more out
of life than her blue collar surroundings can offer, packs up her possessions and her six
children and heads off to find their dream house.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Bates is sexually harassed on the job. And, there is a scene
which implies a rape (nothing is shown).
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A child falls from a roof and has a nail stuck in his
back. His older brother pulls it out and there is a little blood. There a few fist fights.
Several brutal and disturbing scenes where Bates whips her son with his father's belt.
Bates' character is beaten up off screen and the implication is that she was raped.
PROFANITY 4 - A couple of dozen scatological terms, anatomical references
and assorted cursing. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Poverty, single parenthood, sexual harassment and rape, child
abuse.
MESSAGE - Your family will always be there, through good times and bad.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
