Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Emily Watson stars as the late cellist Jacqueline du Pre.
The film is based on du Pre's real-life story, and told from the perspective of her
sister Hilary (Rachel Griffiths) and brother Piers (Rupert Penry-Jones). With James Frain,
David Morrissey, Charles Dance, Celia Imrie, Rupert Penry-Jones, Bill Paterson, Auriol
Evans, Keeley Flanders, Nyree Dawn Porter and Vernon Dobtcheff.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Sexual innuendo and kissing. A woman's bare breasts are
glimpsed a couple times in one scene. A couple kiss and the man puts his head under her
sweater. A couple is shown talking in bed and obviously naked but sheets cover the nudity.
There are two sex scenes, both with a couple in bed and the man on top of the woman and
thrusting during intercourse.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A woman has blood on her legs and she tries to cut her arm
with a tree branch.

PROFANITY 6 - About 11 F-words and a few scatological references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Marriage, sisters, musicians.
MESSAGE - There is no such thing as a normal, happy life.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
