ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Many swordfights are waged between Christopher Lambert and
Mario Van Peebles.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Lambert has a tryst in the hay (off-camera). The woman is
shown in one of those medieval many-layered undergarments. Another sex scene is very
brief, but the woman's nude body is shown in silhouette. A kiss or two.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - Several men are (mostly off-camera) crushed by a cave-in.
Three or four people are impaled by swords -- not shown in a disturbingly graphic way.
There are several sword fights, and other rough-and-tumble hand-to-hand battles. There is
a talking severed head and several beheadings with swords, as well as one by guillotine.
The latter is done off-camera. A man is sliced in half, but does not die. His halves are
rejoined. A corpse, with his severed head stitched on, is shown briefly. An old man is
struck several times.
PROFANITY 3 - A couple of scatological terms are whispered. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Kidnapping; ritual killing.
MESSAGE - Good triumphs over evil.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
