Hercules | 1997 | G | - 1.3.1

An animated feature about the Greek demi-god and son of Zeus.

SEX/NUDITY 1 - Sexual innuendo. Kissing.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A pillar falls and crushes a woman. Hercules fights some scary-looking monsters: he puts out the eye of the Cyclops (not actually shown), and with a many-headed snake he slices its head off from the inside (there's lots of goo). The fight scenes have punching, kicking, swordplay and people and monsters getting thrown around. Huge monsters use fire and ice to destroy the earth and Mt. Olympus, while Zeus responds by flinging lightning bolts. The Fates share an eyeball that keeps getting thrown around (with squishy noises). Ghosts float in the river of death. Hercules is bruised and battered after a monster beats him. Chases, falls, pratfalls, lots of fires, fireballs, and explosions.

LANGUAGE 1 - A few insults.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Heroism, death and immortality, celebrity, Greek mythology.

MESSAGE - Even immortality is empty without the one you love. Being famous doesn't make you a hero; true heroism means having a generous heart.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
