The film centers around the story of Le Ly (Hiep Thi Le), a
young Vietnamese woman who must fight to save her family, her land and her soul. Tommy Lee
Jones co-stars.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - Several sex scenes with some nudity. Thi Le is raped, and
there are a couple of shots of her bare breasts. There's a close-up of Tommy Lee Jones
naked sitting in his van (no frontal nudity).
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - Plenty, throughout the film: two young girls heads are
blown off in a fox hole. Thi Le is raped, dragged by her hair and given electric shocks.
Three women are tied to a stake, covered in honey and stung by bees. Snakes are put down
their chests. There's a close-up of a prostitute's severed head lying near a dumpster.
Jones holds a gun to Thi Le's head and threatens to blow it off. In another scene, he puts
a gun in his mouth and tries to pull the trigger.
PROFANITY 5 - The F-word is used about a half a dozen times. There are also
several scatological and anatomical references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - War, rape, poverty, betrayal, divorce, mental illness,
discrimination, kidnapping, suicide.
MESSAGE - Victories are not won on battle fields.
