ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

An amazingly intelligent but emotionally-troubled
young man (Matt Damon) is torn between using his genius and just being one of the
working-class guys. With Ben Affleck, Minnie Driver, Robin Williams, Stellan Skarsgard,
Casey Affleck and Cole Hauser. Directed by Gus Van Sant.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - Lots of sexual innuendo (including a few lewd jokes and
references to homosexuality, masturbation, and oral sex). Kissing, sometimes passionately.
A couple talks and kisses in bed; the woman wears a tank top and the man is shirtless. We
briefly hear sounds of a man and woman having sex, and we learn that, off-screen, a man
has been masturbating while watching a pornographic movie. We see a few cleavage-revealing
outfits.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Two groups of guys get into a fistfight; they punch and
kick each other, and one man is repeatedly punched in the face (his face and a few of the
others' faces are cut and bloody). A man punches the wall next to a woman's face
during an argument. A man grabs another man by the throat while verbally threatening him.
PROFANITY 10 - Nearly 150 F-words, lots of anatomical and scatological
references, many insults and several mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Being a genius, abandonment, death, therapy, falling in love,
taking risks, friendship, success and failure, psychiatry.
MESSAGE - Don't be afraid to expand your horizons; a comfortable life
isn't necessarily a satisfying one.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
