Val Kilmer and Michael Douglas track down man-eating lions
in this true story from 1890's Africa.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 8 - A couple of fires, a man holds a gun to another's head.
Falls, chases. A cow is stabbed and a man drinks a cup of the blood, a vulture eats a
bloody corpse, a cave of skeletons, bloody grass after a lion attack. A building is
covered with blood and bloody animal parts (to lure lions). Lion attacks: one resulting in
bloody leg scratches, a lion pulls apart the bloody body of a victim, a lion jumps on one
man and shreds another's neck resulting in blood, a lion pulls a man along the ground then
kills him, a lion kills everyone in a hospital. Rioting, men are used as bait and are
nearly attacked by a lion. Lions are shot, some stalking scenes, a dream sequence has a
mother and her baby attacked by a lion.
PROFANITY 3 - A couple of scatological references and a few mild
obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Lions and animal attacks, hunting, technological progress,
the past, Africa.
MESSAGE - Sometimes nature beats technology; you can't deny the beast within
or without.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
