ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

A very long history lesson (4 hours and 8 minutes)
depicting the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - Although blood is kept to a minimum, it is impossible to
depict the three days of this battle without displaying the mass killing which took place.
We see many people being shot, bayonetted and blown up (there were more than 50,000
casualties during the battle). Dead animals are also shown, but never in close up. The
camera spends time with some wounded or dying characters. In all of these cases we see
their bloody wounds. The camera scans fields covered with dead and writhing bodies. There
is a very frank discussion of the conditions in a field hospital.
PROFANITY 1 - Mild curses and name calling. There are also dated racial
references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Slavery, the Civil War, judging people by their race.
MESSAGE - Both sides fighting in this war are depicted in a positive light,
as fighting for what they believed in.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
