ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Brendan Fraser is a man who has lived in the jungle all his
life with apes as family.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - George spends most of the screen time clad only in a
lioncloth (and in one scene he has a book in front of himself and a bowl behind, and
nothing else). Kissing, sexual innuendo.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - An ape is shot with a tranquilizer dart. A lion nearly
attacks a couple. A man fights a lion with punches, kicks and tosses. A couple nearly
drown in rapids. A couple of fights with punches, kicks (sometimes in the crotch), bites,
twirls, etc. Mostly cartoonish: lots of falls and pratfalls, lots of scenes of people
slamming into trees and other things. A man has a bit of blood on his bandages in one
scene. Threatening with guns.
PROFANITY 1 - One anatomical reference. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The jungle, primates and other animals, falling in love.
MESSAGE - To be truly civilized means having a generous heart.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
