ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

In this animated tale, Crysta, a blue-eyed fairy, shrinks
Zak, a human logger, to fairy size when a tree falls in his direction. She then introduces
him to the magic of the rainforest and opens his eyes to the threats posed by humans and
the evil spirit Hexxus. In their own way, each helps save FernGully from destruction.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - The male fairies do not wear shirts. Also, Crysta and Zak
share a quick kiss and, later, an embrace-but, remember, these characters are animated.
VIOLENCE 1 - Largely, the leveler "eating" trees-a rather loud
process which might prompt cries from small children. Eventually, the evil Hexxus is
imprisoned within a large tree.
PROFANITY 0 - None. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The deforestation of the rainforest.
MESSAGE - Here good over evil is synonymous with protecting the environment.
Telling the truth is also emphasized.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
