Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Jeff Bridges stars as a plane crash survivor who's unable
to comprehend how he could have survived. His singular experience takes away any sense of
normalcy, not only from him, but from his family and friends.
SEX/NUDITY 0 - None.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - The premise of the movie is a catastrophic plane crash,
shown with gut-wrenching realism. Flashback scenes of the accident are very disturbing:
dead bodies are strewn everywhere, with close-up shots of the charred and mangled
passengers.

PROFANITY 5 - The F-word and its permutations are used about a half a dozen
times, as well as some scatological and anatomical language. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Death, fear.
MESSAGE - Take the time to enjoy life because you never know when your
number will be up.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
