Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Nicolas Cage and John Travolta are terrorist and law
officer, respectively, and they switch identities.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A man's naked bottom is seen. A man squeezes a woman's
clothed behind. A cartoon of a big-breasted woman. Audio of sexual noises and moaning.
Kissing and sexual innuendo (including implied references to oral sex).
VIOLENCE/GORE 9 - A laser cuts around a face with some blood; then the face
is sucked off with sucking sounds (seen twice) and we see it floating in a glass bowl --
we glimpse the bloody, raw skin and muscle underneath. A man's chest is sliced open (some
blood). Many gunfights, mostly with automatic gunfire, sometimes with blood and sometimes
resulting in death. Blood squirts out of a man's neck, an ear is shot off and we later see
the mangled side of a man's head. Blood spurts out of a shot knee, a man is shot in the
forehead with some blood, a man spits out blood, lots of blood on the floor in one
gunfight and lots of blood on a man's chest. A woman is shot in the back of the head. A
body is thrown in front of a car and rolls under it. A man is shot and blood is splattered
on a wheel. A shot kills a boy who's shown with blood on his face. A few people are set on
fire after being doused with gasoline. Several stabbings and a man cuts another man's face
(some blood). A spear gun impales a man in the belly (some blood). A woman puts out a
cigarette on a comatose man's arm. A man falls through a skylight and dies. Some
fistfights with some blood (on mouth, faces and hands). A man is slightly mangled in a
wind tunnel. An attempted stabbing with an anchor, chases, reckless driving and flying.
Some explosions.

PROFANITY 8 - About 30 F-words, some mild obscenities, a few anatomical
references, some scatological references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Terrorism, law enforcement, surgical technology, identity.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
