Liam Neeson stars in this filming of Edith Wharton's
eponymous novel. The story is about illicit lust, and takes place in a snow-covered New
England village around the turn of the century.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - The theme of the movie is sexual yearning and infidelity and
there is palpable sexual tension throughout. However, there's no nudity. There are a
couple of torrid kisses, one apparently leading to love-making (Neeson appears to unbutton
his pants) but we see absolutely nothing.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A couple of dead chickens. A dead, bloody fox is picked up
and nailed to the barn; its mouth is dripping blood, the result of being poisoned. After
running into a tree while sledding, we see two bodies lying in the snow (we do not see
them hitting the tree). There is some blood by one of the victims. We later see a woman's
scarred face and a crippled man.
PROFANITY 0 - None. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Infidelity, lust, lying, hypochondria, sickness and death,
compassion and charity.
MESSAGE - Illicit lust will lead to tragedy. Don't judge without knowing the
whole story.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
