Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) is a brash research
assistant who works for an attorney (Albert Finney) in a small law office and, without any
formal education or legal experience, builds a lawsuit against a utility company
responsible for contaminating a town's water supply. Also with Aaron Eckhart, Marg
Helgenberger, Cherry Jones, Veanne Cox, Conchata Ferrell, Tracey Walter, Peter Coyote,
Scotty Leavenworth, Gemmenne De la Pena, Jamie Harrold, Mimi Kennedy, Norma Maldonado and
Scarlett Pomers. [2:10]
SEX/NUDITY 3 - A few instances of sexual innuendo and some kissing. We see a
women in a bra and an unbuttoned shirt standing and talking to a man lying in a bed; later
we see them kissing and talking in bed (he's shirtless). A woman wears a cleavage- and
bra-revealing top in nearly every scene.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A car runs into another as it speeds through an
intersection (one of the cars spins around and we later see its driver in a neck brace). A
woman picks up a dead frog floating in a pond and we see photographs of some possibly dead
birds. A few brief scenes of yelling.
PROFANITY 8 - About 27 F-words, many anatomical references, lots of
scatological references, lots of mild obscenities and a couple of insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Lawsuits, water contamination, cancer, determination, single
motherhood, using your appearance/body to help you get what you want.
MESSAGE -Fight for what you believe is right. Emotion and determination can
be more useful to your career than a formal education.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
