Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
This epic World War II romance has Ralph Fiennes as a
dashing explorer and Kristin Scott Thomas as his adulterous lover.
SEX/NUDITY 7 - Kissing, sexual innuendo, a few sex scenes (one time
standing) with all scenes containing nudity, kissing, fondling clothed and unclothed body
parts and sometimes thrusting. Full frontal female nudity seen twice and a few scenes show
a woman s bare breasts.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - War scenes with explosions, shooting, etc. Some scuffles,
a man is hit in the head with a rifle butt, a man s thumb is severed while he screams and
we see a pool of blood. A car crash and a couple of plane crashes with fireballs and
gunfire; a plane nearly hits a man, after a plane crash a man has blood on his face and
after a car explodes over a mine we see bloody, mangled bodies. Throughout the film we see
a badly burned and disfigured man; we see his face a couple of times as a bloody pulp. A
few scenes in an army hospital show bloody wounds and bedding.

PROFANITY 5 - Four F-words, a couple of scatological references and
anatomical references, a few mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - War, adultery, love affairs, death, dying, nursing.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
