Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Set in London
just after WWII, this love story has Ralph Fiennes playing secret lover to a married
Julianne Moore. Based on Graham Greene's novel and directed by Neil Jordan. With Stephen
Rea, Ian Hart, Sam Bould, Jason Isaacs, James Bolam and Deborah Findlay. [2:24]
SEX/NUDITY 7 - Sexual innuendo, mostly discussion of extramarital affairs
and getting caught in the act of lovemaking. We see several kissing scenes and four sex
scenes. In one extended scene, a man puts his hand up a woman's skirt and rubs her clothed
breast, then the two fondle, grope and passionately undress each other before falling on a
bed and having intercourse with moaning (we see a few close-ups of the man's bare buttocks
-- in one the woman's hand is squeezing his buttocks -- and glimpse his pubic hair). In
another scene, they sit upright on a bed and we see lots of thrusting, a few shots of her
bare breasts, and hear her moaning (we also see the couple in bed, naked from the waist
up, post coitus). In two other scenes, we see them kissing passionately in bed and see
their bodies thrusting under the covers (in one, we see a close-up of her bare breast and
in the other we see part of her bare buttocks). We see a brief shot of a woman's bare
breast as she gets dressed.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - We hear loud bombs, and we see one bomb blow a man down a
staircase; he survives but has a bloody gash on his head and blood on his chest and back.
Later, we see a scar on the man's thigh.

PROFANITY 2 - A few anatomical references, one mild obscenity and a few
insults. [profanity glossary]
MESSAGE - Some people like habit more than happiness while others prefer
passion to loyalty -- but in the end understanding and forgiveness benefit all.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
