Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
Pauly Shore, MTV's cool-personality-in-residence, as a
high-school neo-hippie loser and Sean Astin as his nerdy pal, find a frozen Cro-Magnon man
(Brendan Fraser) while they're digging a big hole in their backyard.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - None to speak of. A scantily clad model in a poster in a boys
closet. The caveman is shown in his native attire, a loin cloth. Some french kissing is
shown, but nothing passionate.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - Some bullying, shoving and punching, but no blood is
spilled.
the review continues below...
PROFANITY 1 - Some name calling, most of which is in "Pauly
Speak," no real profanity. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Like, get real?
MESSAGE - Never use people for what you can get out of them, being a friend
is more important and will get you much farther. Being cool is not important, it's more
important to be comfortable with who you are.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
