Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
An over-achieving student (Reese Witherspoon) runs for
student body president and a popular teacher (Matthew Broderick) resorts to drastic
measures to keep her from winning in this black comedy. Also with Chris Klein, Jessica
Campbell, Mark Harelik, Phil Reeves, Molly Hagan, Delaney Driscoll, Colleen Camp, Frankie
Ingrassia, Matt Malloy, Jeanine Jackson and Holmes Osborne. [1:43]
SEX/NUDITY 7 - Lots of sexual innuendo (including a boy's reference to being
well-endowed), instances of teen and teacher/student sex, and some sex talk during
intercourse and regarding intercourse. Several kisses, sometimes passionate: two clothed
girls kiss and caress each other while lying on a bed and a man and woman kiss and roll
around on the floor. A man watches a pornographic film during which a man has intercourse
with a woman from behind with lots of thrusting and moaning; we see the top of her bare
breasts as she bends over. A man and woman have intercourse in an unusual position (we see
them from the side and only his bare back is visible); we hear some sex talk and moans,
see them moving rhythmically and see him having an orgasm. As a man has intercourse with a
woman lying face-down, he envisions two women's faces (during separate moments) on the
back of her head uttering some graphic sex talk. Oral sex is implied: We see a boy's
excited expression then see a girl's head moving in his crotch. We see some
cleavage-revealing tops, some centerfold magazine covers and statues of a nude caveman and
cavewoman twice (his genitals and her bare breasts are visible).
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A girl gets some bloody cuts on her arms after she tears
down some posters and a man's eye is very swollen after a bee stings him. We see two cups
of urine and a man urinating (the urine stream is visible). Someone spits on a car and man
throws a drink at a car.

PROFANITY 6 - About 15 F-words (some uttered as directives during
intercourse), some anatomical references, a few scatological references, a few mild
obscenities and several insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Infidelity, campaigns, winning at all costs, obsessive
behavior, lesbianism, marijuana use, teacher/student sex, teenage and premarital sex.
MESSAGE - Some people can abandon all their beliefs and morals to get what
they want (or to stop others from getting what they want).
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
