ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Johnny Depp stars as Edward D. Wood, Jr. -- the worst
director of all time ("Glen or Glenda?" and "Plan 9 from Outer
Space").
SEX/NUDITY 2 - Depp is shown in women's clothing a few times, although only
once is the clothing revealing; some sexual references (references to transvestites and
sex changes). A woman is shown in a strapless bra and a boy tries to grab at a woman's
exposed cleavage.
VIOLENCE/GORE 1 - A few scenes of yelling, one of which includes a woman
throwing plates and kitchenware and hitting a man in the head with a skillet. A man's
track-riddled arm -- from drug use -- is shown: he lies in a hospital bed screaming during
withdrawal.
PROFANITY 5 - Eight F-words, several scatological references and a handful
of mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Sexual deviations (cross-dressing and transvestitism), the
whims of fame.
MESSAGE - Follow your dream; friends are priceless.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
