Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
An abusive Pakistani man (Om Puri) marries an English woman
and struggles to let go of his homeland's traditions and accept his Anglicized children.
Also with Linda Bassett, Jordan Routledge, Archie Panjabi, Emil Marwa, Chris Bisson, Jimi
Mistry, Raji James and Ian Aspinall. [1:36]
SEX/NUDITY 7 - Some instances of sexual innuendo, including a reference to
incest. A young man and woman kiss passionately and a man kisses another man on the cheek.
We see a married couple having sex (they're under the covers, but we see thrusting). In
two scenes a dog tries to hump a girl's leg. A man grabs a woman's clothed buttocks.
Several scenes in which people inspect and make fun of a boy's genitalia (which we never
see). We see a naked man's bare backside, then see his nude torso from his pubic hair up
as he bathes in a tub; also, we see a poster of a naked woman (full frontal nudity),
several sketches of erect male genitalia, and a sculpture/cast of a woman's pelvic area,
including close-ups of pubic hair and genitalia. We see a couple of shirtless men.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A disturbing scene in which a man slaps, punches and
altogether beats up his wife (we see her bruised face later). A man slaps another man
repeatedly and a boy punches another in the face. An older boy gets circumcised and we
hear him scream. A man threatens another with a knife. We see bloody cuts on a man's face
after being beaten and cuts on a boy's face after he's been in a fight. A nude man
urinates in a bath tub and then steps into the tub to bathe; we also see a few scenes in
which young boys urinate.

PROFANITY 7 - About 20 F-words, an obscene finger gesture, a couple of
anatomical references, several scatological references, a few mild obscenities and several
insults. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Domestic abuse, families, father-son relationships,
circumcision, cultural wars, homosexuality, personal independence, conformity, incest,
arranged marriage.
MESSAGE - Parents must accept change and allow their children to be who and
what they want to be.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
