ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

Johnny Depp stars as a young man who thinks he is the
legendary lover and Marlon Brando is the psychiatrist who is pulled into the young man's
delusions.
SEX/NUDITY 4 - A woman stands by a mirror and we see her naked behind (in a
rather long scene), a lot of talk about sex -- but usually in an archaic, romantic manner
-- a few scenes of people kissing passionately. A man and woman are shown in bed
presumably after having had sex. And, a man and woman are shown having sex and we see
naked body parts and writhing and hear the woman moaning. The scene has a lot of cuts in
it so it's hard to tell what is actually happening. A woman is shown in a see-through
blouse, and a group of women are shown in various stages of undress. Photos of a nude
woman are shown exposing bare breasts and behinds. A woman undresses while young boys
watch her.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man stands on a billboard threatening to commit suicide.
A man threatens to kill a man, charges him with a sword and crashes through a window. A
sword fight results in two dead men, with small bloody wounds on their torsos.
PROFANITY 2 - Two scatological terms and some mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Insanity and delusions, retirement, mental institutions,
psychotropic drugs, suicide, adultery.
MESSAGE - You must have romance to keep love alive; not all delusions are
dangerous.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
