ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Eddie Murphy stars as a small-time con artist who wins a
congressional seat due to name recognition (he's called Thomas Jefferson Johnson) and
quickly discovers that the big cons are the perfectly legal kind pulled every day on
Capitol Hill.
SEX/NUDITY 3 - One clothed, but very graphic, sex scene in which the
original Congressman Johnson has sex with an aide on a desk. It is in this scene he has a
heart attack and dies. In the beginning Murphy and his cousin are running a phone sex scam
with some sexual innuendos. No nudity.
VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - Pretty mild stuff. There's a scuffle, and one punch is
thrown. Also, Murphy kicks a guy.
PROFANITY 4 - Lots of references to excrement and a few SOBs. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Adultery, stealing, blackmail, bribery (all that usual
Congressional stuff).
MESSAGE - Corruption is bad. It's better to do the right thing because you
should make a difference with your life. Money isn't everything.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
