Die Another Day | 2002 | PG-13 | - 5.6.3

The twentieth film in the James Bond series finds 007 (Pierce Brosnan) globetrotting from Hong Kong to Cuba to London as he tries to unmask a traitor, prevent a war, and romance Halle Berry. Judi Dench resumes her role as M, and John Cleese takes over Q Branch. Also with Rosamund Pike, Rick Yune, Lawrence Makoare and Will Yun Lee. [2:15]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - The introductory credits are accompanied by silverish female forms floating and dancing on the screen; some are made to look like ice and others are molten, and it is clear (a few times) that the women are nude and we see glimpses of nipples. A woman emerges from the sea in a bikini and we linger on her as she walks toward a man. A man and woman have sex: The woman is on top, they kiss and thrust, we see her bare back and his bare chest, he flips her over and they kiss some more. A woman drops her dress, climbs into bed and a man joins her and they begin to kiss. A man and a woman kiss passionately, the woman sits on a desk, pulls the man toward her and they kiss some more as she lies back (it's a computer simulation). A woman in bra and panties lies on the ground and a bare-chested man kisses her and lies on top of her. In other scenes, a man and a woman kiss passionately, and a man and woman kiss a couple of times. A woman drops her dress while two men watch (we see her in a bikini). A woman standing on a pier wears a dress that blows open exposing cleavage and her bare thigh. A woman's evening gown is cut low in the back exposing her bare back and hip. A scantily clad woman lies on the bed in a man's hotel room. A woman's outfit reveals cleavage and her bare abdomen. A woman comes to a man's hotel room, he kisses her neck and caresses her thigh. A man is bare-chested in a few scenes. Sexual innuendo includes: A man sitting at a table with his arm around a woman speaks aggressively to a man demanding "more women" be sent to his room, a woman's glances falls below the waist of a man and she remarks "now there's a mouthful," a man says to a woman "shall I have the pleasure of you?", a woman talks about getting the "thrust" of a man's "big bang theory," a woman says to another woman "he did you?" and "he was pretty vigorous last night," a man and a woman talk about "going down together," a man says to a woman "it's rather hard," and a woman says to a man "don't pull it out."

VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - A man is shot twice in the chest (we see two bloody holes in his jacket). Two men fight while lasers dance around the room (one is cut across the back), one holds the other down and attempts to stab him when he is shot through the back of the head with a laser that shoots out through his mouth. We see repeated scenes of a man being tortured in a prison: his head is dunked into water, he is apparently repeatedly stung by scorpions, and he is punched and kicked. A man holds another man, gives him an electrical jolt and then shoots him in the chest (we see a hole in his jacket). A woman struggles to free herself from a room that is filling with water; when the room is full we see her go under water and then she floats motionless. Two men fence, one is injured, then they get larger swords and continue fighting and punching each other whenever possible: one is slashed on the leg, one is slashed on the ear, and they keep going, while running through a club filled with people, knocking down tables, crashing through display cases, and falling down stairs -- both men end up with small bloody wounds. A woman lasers a man's hand off (we don't really see the severed limb). Two men fight with punches and kicks while two women fight with swords and kicks; a woman is slashed with a sword and throws a knife that hits the other woman in the chest and she falls to the floor dead (she has blood trickling from her nose). A man punches and kicks a duffel bag that hangs from a chain attached to the ceiling, he unzips the bag and a man, bloodied and bruised, falls to the floor. A man escapes from people with guns by driving an ice-racing vehicle which is then chased by a large laser that melts the ice behind him, burns brush and trees and blasts everything in its path; the racer dangles over a cliff as the laser approaches and cuts off a large chunk of the cliff causing an enormous wave, which the man surfs back to safety. A briefcase explodes blowing up several people standing around it (one man is shown with diamonds stuck into his face and with streaks of blood), and men open fire blowing up cars and buildings. A hole is blown through a plane's window causing people to be sucked out of the plane, and the plane to plummet toward earth. A man lies on a table hooked up to IVs and another man squeezes one of his IV bags causing the man to wince and then the two men fight: One man wraps cords around another man's neck, they punch and kick each other, one man pulls a gun, a fire starts, one man jumps through a window, a bomb explodes in an office, and then a woman chases a man while shooting at him. A man is sucked out of a flying plane and into an engine. A woman is zapped on the back of the neck with an electrical charge, we then see her strapped to a table, and being jolted by the charge while being interrogated. A woman holds a gun on a man, the glass floor they are standing on breaks out from under them, and the man runs and is chased by several people shooting at him. A plane flies through a laser beam and it begins breaking to pieces. A man goes into cardiac arrest, two doctors perform CPR on him and shock his chest, he grabs the paddles and shocks the two men and they fall to the floor. Two men fight on the back of a hovercraft; one fires a flame-thrower at the other, they punch and kick each other, one man is pinned against the fan, the hovercraft crashes through a wall and plummets to a waterfall below. A man is stabbed in the throat by a thrown knife. Two men fight briefly, and two other men are knocked over by steam from a pipe. We hear gunshots and see people lying dead on the floor (one with a bullet hole in her forehead), a woman is held at gunpoint and a man shoots the assailant's arm -- it turns out that this is a computer simulation. There's a car chase, with two men driving on ice while firing at each other with rockets and guns; one car is flipped on its roof by an explosion and slides across the ice, one car drives through two men on snowmobiles and through the door of an ice building, one car charges toward the other and misses and sails over a ledge and into water below. A chandelier is shot off the ceiling and falls on the man in the water (we see the water turn red). A man and a woman in a helicopter fall out of the back of a plane that explodes and sends flaming shrapnel at them; the chopper falls out of control toward the ground but starts just before crashing into the ground. There's a chase scene with men on several hovercrafts; the men fire guns back and forth at each other, one hovercraft crashes into a gate, one flips over and explodes, one man fires a flame-thrower and sets brush on fire. One hovercraft crashes into another and a man climbs from one onto the other, and one man shoots at land mines causing them to explode as hovercrafts approach. A man drives through an ice wall, water pours out over the car and washes an unconscious woman out. A man is held by another woman with an electrical charge and he moans and cringes. A snowmobile crashes into an invisible car and the driver flips through the air, and a man flips off a snowmobile after being clotheslined. A man in a wheelchair is shoved into a wall, he falls out of the chair and onto the floor. A man punches another man in the face and he falls to the floor, and a woman kicks a man in the face. A woman falls back off a wall plunging into the sea below (she swims away uninjured). A man points his gun at another man's crotch. A man holds a woman at gunpoint, throws an ashtray at a mirror and holds the gun on the three men who were behind the mirror. A firing squad points their weapons at a man, and a woman is held at gunpoint by two guards. A man talks about his son being dead. A man gets an injection in the arm, falls unconscious and we see him being scanned on a table and getting another injection. A man has scars on his shoulders, chest and back from repeated beatings. A man threatens a man with a gun and takes his briefcase. A man fires at a helicopter that blows up, and a man blows a stone wall open with a metal pipe. A man and woman run after a taxiing plane and climb on through the tire bays. A man jumps into a hole in the ice and swims some distance before surfacing (he's using a breathing mechanism). There are a couple of fencing scenes. The opening screen shows a man firing a gun and red liquid oozes from the top of the frame. A man and woman glide out of the back of a plane and parachute to land. Three people are shown surfing at night on a huge wave. A huge laser cuts a path on the ground and we see people dodging the fires and the explosions. A missile heading toward a satellite is destroyed. A man describes the painful process of gene replacement therapy. A man shoots and kills his father.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
