The Devil Inside | 2012 | R | - 3.7.6

A woman's childhood memories include the night when her mother murdered three people in their home, apparently while they were trying to perform an exorcism on her. She ventures to Italy and enlists the help of two exorcist priests to figure out whether her mother was possessed or mentally ill. Also with Fernanda Andrade, Bonnie Morgan, Evan Helmuth, Suzan Crowley and Ionut Grama. Directed by Brent Bell. [1:27]

SEX/NUDITY 3 - A woman presumably under the influence of a demon slithers her tongue in a suggestive manner toward another woman and makes sexually suggestive remarks; we see blood on her pants coming from between her legs (she thrusts her hips and makes sexually suggestive remarks to a woman in the room) and she grabs a man by the arm and asks him (using crude terms) to allow her to perform oral sex on him.
A woman makes a comment about a man's mother having had sex with his father's best friend.

VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - A man is discovered in a dark room with very bloody cuts on his arms and his eyes are rolled back in his head; a police officer enters the room and runs out saying the man had taken his gun, and we see the man holding the gun, placing it in his mouth and shooting himself (blood splatters on the wall behind him and he falls to the floor).
We see a disturbance in a hospital hallway and staff members rush into a room: a woman is shown covered in blood, presumably after being attacked by another patient in her room, and we see that patient being held by hospital staff as she thrashes and growls and yells.
Police officers walk through a crime scene and describe what they find while we see three victims of apparent beatings: One man is shown with a lot of blood on his head, face, arms and hands and a blood-covered wrench is seen on the floor near his body; a woman is found covered with blood on the face, head and hands; and a third victim is shown with blood covering his clothing, his face and head and smeared on the wall behind him (we also see another blood soaked weapon on the floor near him).
A priest holds an infant while performing a baptism and places him in a small tub of water, then pushes him under the water and holds him there until other people panic and pull him away (we hear that the baby survived).
While riding in a car with two men, a woman comes out from under sedation, she screams loudly and beings berating one of the men, implying that the man was somehow involved in another man's death; she grabs the driver around the neck and says something to him, he unfastens his seatbelt and steers the car toward an oncoming vehicle, the cars crash together and we see the three people in the car being thrown around as the car apparently flips over (we do not see the outcome).
During an exorcism a woman is restrained to a hospital bed, she screams loudly, her eyes change color, and she makes threats to a man injecting her with a hypodermic needle; the woman frees one of her arms and throws a man onto the floor, she makes a crude threat toward a man and a woman, she strikes a man and he is thrown across the room and into a wall, and she spits in a man's face and tells a woman "You'll burn."
During an exorcism a woman breaks free from her restraints, she grabs a man by the arm, he holds her, she breaks free and climbs up a wall, she then falls to the floor, and she is restrained by three people and eventually calms down.
During an exorcism a woman tied to a bed speaks in a deep voice and says insulting things to the other people in the room (some of what she says seems to be in foreign languages and is not translated); she thrashes and contorts her body and we see blood on her pants coming from between her legs (she thrusts her hips and makes sexually suggestive remarks to a woman in the room).
A woman is restrained in a bed in a dark and filthy basement; we see her contorted body covered with a sheet, the sheet is removed, she is injected with a hypodermic and her limbs relax to a normal state; she twists her arm around, we see her shoulder bulge and hear a loud pop, she has sores on her flesh, oddly large pupils and dried vomit on her face and she is tied to the bed frame while a priest begins an exorcism. A woman presumably possessed by a demon bends herself backward at the waist and we hear cracking as she pleads for help.
A woman in a video is represented as being possessed by demons and we see her malformed body, she speaks in growling tones and then in a high-pitched voice, she gags and retches, and then lunges at the camera. A woman in a video grabs a man's head and slams him into a table, she is pulled away and she yells loudly (we see the injured man stumble). While police officers examine a crime scene we hear a noise, the officers shine a light into a crawl space and something lunges at the camera (we do not see what it is and the screen goes dark). A woman on a video bangs her head against a cement wall and moans deeply; she then struggles with hospital attendants who try to restrain her and we see blood on her head and face from the self-inflicted injury.
We see a woman with cataract-covered eyes. A man's nose bleeds and we see drops of blood on a piece of paper. A woman appears to have some sort of seizure and is rushed to a hospital where we see her with and IV. A woman is shown with numerous small cuts in the shape of upturned crosses on her arm and inside her lip.
A woman speaks to another woman in hushed tones and then screams a blood-curdling scream until she is ushered out of the room. We hear a recorded 911 call and a woman's voice says, "Three people are dead... I killed them... I killed everyone." A woman tells another woman in a threatening manner, "You shouldn't have killed your child" and "It's against the will of God." A man talks about being in "direct war with God." A man says, "The church isn't in the business of healing people." During an exorcism a woman says to a man "Not after what you did" implying he was involved in the death of another man. A man says, "She just killed that woman." We are told that a woman fractured her own femur during a demonic possession. A woman talks about her mother's behavior, and that her moods had been changing, and that she went away for a while and when she came back nothing had changed. We hear that a woman was transferred to a hospital for the criminally insane. A man lectures about the various types of demonic possession and the corresponding indicators. A woman talks about her father dying.
We hear an explosion and a house goes dark; we hear a loud ruckus and yelling coming from upstairs and people go to investigate. A large dog barks viciously and lunges at a fence beyond which three people walk on a sidewalk.

SUBSTANCE USE - A doctor talks about having a patient on many types of drugs to control her violent outbursts. A priest drinks wine and smokes a cigarette and people are shown at a table with glasses of wine and beer in front of them (we do not see them drink and two of the people are priests). A man smokes a cigarette.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
