As a director of a movie within a movie starring Madonna
and James Russo, Harvey Keitel is thrown into the question of whether art can mirror
reality.
SEX/NUDITY 8 - There are two explicit sex scenes featuring Madonna; she is
shown in bed with Keitel and Russo. Keitel is also involved in two other sex scenes with
his wife. There is nudity in all of the sex scenes, exposing posteriors and breasts.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - The violence is more mental than physical, with Russo
sadistically lacerating Madonna's beliefs. Russo cuts his hand, supposedly slits Madonna's
throat and the bloody results are shown.
PROFANITY 10 - Counting the F-words will force the viewer to miss the film.
There is also a full range of scatological and anatomical terms. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Love, commitment, despair, artistic courage, drawing the
line.
MESSAGE - Is method acting the only authentic approach to life?

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
