MPAA Rating: R

Film adaptation of Josephine Hart's erotic novel about an upper-class Britisher (Jeremy Irons) who carries on an illicit affair with his son's fiancee (Juliette Binoche).

SEX/NUDITY 7 - Remarkably -- for a film threatened with an NC-17 rating -- there isn't as much straightforward nudity as in most R-rated movies. However, the overall tone is raunchy, with numerous graphic scenes of rough sex, one scene of implied oral sex, and one brief scene with a frontally nude man. There is also talk of a brother/sister relationship with the insinuation of incest.

VIOLENCE/GORE 2 - A man plummets to his death, and while the camera lingers on the falling body, there's little blood.

PROFANITY 5 - Five F-words. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - The quasi-incestual relationship between a father-in-law and his daughter-in-law. Intense sexual passion beyond all reason. Self-destructiveness. Suicide.

MESSAGE - Lust can overwhelm, especially when one has been suppressing passion for most of his life.
