ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

Geena Davis and Matthew Modine brave the wild
seas in this swashbuckling romance. Also with Frank Langella, Maury Chaykin, Patrick
Malahide, Stan Shaw, Rex Linn, Paul Dillon, Christopher Masterson, Jimmie F. Skaggs,
Harris Yulin, Carl Chase, Peter Geeves, Angus Wright, and Ken Bones. Directed by Renny
Harlin. [2:03]
SEX/NUDITY 4 - Some sexual innuendo and passionate kissing. A man lies on
top of a woman and they kiss and caress; later the woman gets out of bed and dresses (we
see her bare back) while the man lies in bed (no actual sex or nudity is seen). A man is
shown bare-chested and a woman's cleavage is revealed.
VIOLENCE/GORE 6 - People are shot with pistols and we see lots of swordplay,
sometimes resulting in a bit of blood (at various times a man and woman have blood on
their faces and/or torsos and bruises and scratches). A few glimpses of decayed corpses. A
woman is tied up and almost executed. Some cannon fire, many explosions and many fires.
Quite a few scenes of people beating each other up. A man and woman nearly fall from a
substantial height a couple of times. Chases on foot, carriage and aboard ships.
PROFANITY 3 - A couple of anatomical and scatological references and some
mild obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Piracy, romance, slavery.
MESSAGE - A woman can be just as mean a pirate as a man.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
