ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

A 14-year-old (Alicia Silverstone), falls hard for a
28-year-old neighbor (Cary Elwes) and when her advances are frustrated, bad things start
happening to the supporting cast.
SEX/NUDITY 5 - A couple of bare buttocks (male and female) and long,
sweeping camera shots of a teenager in a bathing suit. There is a titillating mood
throughout, and lots of references to adolescent sex. There are a couple of kisses, and we
see an adult couple in bed, presumably after having had sex.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A woman is stung by wasps, a teenager falls off her horse,
a couple of scuffles (consisting of shoving and a couple of punches) and a couple of men
are struck with a stick. There's very little gore, consisting of a teenager with a black
eye and a split lip.
PROFANITY 5 - Half a dozen F-words, and a few sexually explicit profanities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Under age sex, obsession and psychosis, rape.
MESSAGE - There's no way to reason with a manifestly homicidal psycho.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
