ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|

Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman star as two officers on
a nuclear submarine, at the brink of nuclear holocaust.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A couple of obscene sexual references; a couple of
barechested men; a kiss between a man and his wife.
VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - A fire in the galley results in explosions and people
being bandied about. A man has a cut over his eye which is dripping a great deal of blood.
A man is punched in the face resulting in a slightly bloody nose and a small cut on his
cheek. A man is hit in the face by a hatch. A dead body is shown floating in the bilge. A
man dies of a heart attack. A submarine sustains a hit, which causes the sub to shake
violently -- this happens twice -- and people are injured but not severely. Two men are
held at gunpoint.
PROFANITY 6 - About 25 F-words, 15 scatological terms, many milder
obscenities, a couple of sexual references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Military orders vs. morality, authority, nuclear holocaust.
MESSAGE - While a soldier must follow orders, sometimes he has to follow his
own moral compass and be ready to face the consequences.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
