Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context.

Sex & Nudity
Violence & Gore
1 to 10

MPAA Rating: PG-13

This comedy features four aging mobsters (Burt Reynolds, Richard Dreyfuss, Dan Hedaya and Seymour Cassel) retiring in Miami who inadvertently find themselves entangled in a web of murder, abduction and drug trafficking. Also with Carrie-Anne Moss, Jennifer Tilly, Lainie Kazan, Jeremy Piven and Vincent De Paul. [1:28]

SEX/NUDITY 5 - Lots of sexual innuendo, including references to masturbation and oral sex. A man and woman have intercourse underneath sheets; she makes lots of moaning noises and we see their covered bodies making lots of movement. Two women are at a dinner table with a man and both go under the table near his crotch -- it's implied they perform oral sex on him. A man kisses and sucks a woman's feet and begs her to make love to him. We see a few scenes in a strip club, with several scantily clad (but not naked) women dancing suggestively, taking dollars in their bikinis and wrapping themselves around poles. A woman takes a dollar bill out of her cleavage and stuffs it back in a couple of times. A woman rubs a man's bare back. Several close-ups of a young woman's clothed buttocks as she kisses four men on the cheek (it's implied they get erections from the kissing). We see a woman's bare breasts while she's sunbathing, a man's bare buttocks after he undresses, several women in bikinis, several shirtless men, and lots of cleavage.

VIOLENCE/GORE 5 - Most of the violence is played for laughs. A man has a heart attack and dies. A man is shot in the leg and a man is shot in the shoulder. A man shoves another's head into the toilet, apparently drowning him (he gives him mouth-to-mouth and the man lives). A man is hit with a baseball bat and tossed off a ship into the ocean; another man is punched and tossed into the ocean. A huge crate falls on three men. A man sitting in a truck is punched in the face and then falls out of the truck, a woman kicks a man twice in the face, a man hits another over the head with a whiskey bottle, a man hits another man with a paddle and knocks him out of a boat and into the water, a man hits another between the eyes with a cane, a man hits another with a fishing rod, a man elbows another in the gut and knocks him to the floor (his head lands in the bottom of a urinal), a man is whacked in the groin with a bat, a man is thrown from the second floor of a building into a swimming pool, a man is thrown out of a door and down some stairs, a man swings a bat at a woman but hits a door frame instead, and a man threatens to grab another man's testicles. A man is locked in a car trunk, and a woman is abducted and her mouth is taped shut (the tape is later ripped off). A truck is set on fire and explodes; also, a car explodes. A rat has a cloth tied to its tail and a man catches the cloth on fire; we see several shots of the rat running from the encroaching flames. A man drops a gun and it goes off, firing into an already dead body. Threatening with guns. We see two dead men hanging by their feet from rafters in a warehouse; both fall to the floor. We see many corpses in a morgue, and one's torso is uncovered. We see blood on a man's forehead after he's pistol whipped. It's implied a man on a medical table has something (possibly the doctor's finger) shoved up his buttocks (we see the man's surprised facial expressions). A man passes gas a few times. We see men urinating in two scenes.

PROFANITY 5 - One F-word and one implied F-word, many anatomical and scatological references, several mild obscenities, some religious obscenities, and several insults. [profanity glossary]

DISCUSSION TOPICS - The Mob, parent-child separation, prostitution, strip clubs, anti-Semitism, murder, abduction.

MESSAGE - The old guys are still as tough as a good piece of leather … sort of.

Our Ratings Explained

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.

INAPPROPRIATE ADS? We have little control over ads since we belong to ad agencies that serve ads automatically; a standing order should prevent provocative ads, but inappropriate ads do sneak in.
