ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

Comedy starring Chevy Chase as a man whose household is
taken over by the police for a stakeout. Jack Palance co-stars.
SEX/NUDITY 2 - There is a shot of two nude backsides, (one male and one
female) in a brief shower scene.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - There's a car explosion in which a man is killed. A man
practices killing people by shooting watermelons. A family is taken hostage. And everyone
in the film eventually wields a gun. There is a strong violent undertone to the film, even
if it is supposedly all in good fun.
PROFANITY 2 - There are a handful of scatological and anatomical references,
and milder profanities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Issues surrounding raising a family; the growing problem of
violence in our society.
MESSAGE - Sometimes it takes an extraordinary situation to remind everyone
what it means to be a real family. Also, what it means to be an adult and still be able to
dream.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
