"One of the 50 Coolest Websites...they simply tell it like it is" - TIME

A Cool, Dry Place | 1998 | PG-13 | - 4.3.5

Vince Vaughn plays a single parent who is torn between his estranged wife and new girlfriend, as well as continuing his career as a high-powered attorney and focusing on raising his five-year-old son. Also with Joey Lauren Adams, Monica Potter, Bobby Moat and Devon Sawa. [1:37]

SEX/NUDITY 4 - Some sexual innuendo and several passionate kisses (in one scene, a man lies on a topless woman and kisses her, but all we see is her upper chest from the side). A woman straddles a man as they're standing and kissing, then they move to the couch; we later see them snuggling in bed, obviously post-coitus (they're nude but covered with a sheet). Briefly, a woman moves rhythmically while straddling a man in a car (they're both clothed, but we do see the woman's cleavage). We see a shirtless boy and a girl wrapped in a blanket and it's implied they've been having sexual contact (we haven't seen anything, though). It's implied a girl puts a nickel into her vagina to show off for a boy (she pulls her skirt out and we see him peering up her skirt). We see a man's bare back as he's showering, a woman's bare back as she's showering, a boy's bare back and chest as he bathes, a few bare-chested men and part of a boy's buttocks as he's urinating (he's seen from a distance, so nothing is very clear). We see a man in boxers and a woman in panties and a short shirt sleeping on a couch. A few women wear cleavage-revealing tops.

VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A woman purposely drives her car into a building (no one is injured). Twice, a boy hits a man's back and arm (he does so while the man is carrying him and when the man is threatening to throw something away). A man grabs a boy's arms and drags him into a room. A man throws and breaks a boy's jar. A boy's arm is stuck in a toilet and he screams as a man pulls it out (he's shaken, but not injured). A man knocks over a table and kicks a chair. We briefly see a karate fight on a TV. We see a wrecked car, but learn that no one was injured. A boy urinates in front of a girl (we see the stream).

LANGUAGE 5 - Three F-words, a couple of anatomical references, many scatological references and lots of mild obscenities.

DISCUSSION TOPICS - Marital problems, separation, abandonment, single parenting, relationships, balancing career ambitions and family responsibilities, teen sexuality.

MESSAGE - Being a biological parent doesn't automatically make you a good parent; parenting involves sacrifices.

CAVEATS

Be aware that while we do our best to avoid spoilers it is impossible to disguise all details and some may reveal crucial plot elements.

We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and older reviews are not as complete & accurate as recent ones; we plan to revisit and correct older reviews as resources and time permits.

Our ratings and reviews are based on the theatrically-released versions of films; on video there are often Unrated, Special, Director's Cut or Extended versions, (usually accurately labelled but sometimes mislabeled) released that contain additional content, which we did not review.
