ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

A group of explorers run into a family of killer gorillas.
SEX/NUDITY 1 - A group of bare-chested men.
VIOLENCE/GORE 7 - There isn't a lot of violence until the end of the film
and those scenes are quick -- it's hard to really see what is happening and that lessens
the impact. However, the gorillas look menacing, with hideous teeth, and they tend to fall
upon someone and "feed." They hit their victims with both paws on either side of
the head and torso. There are scenes of gorillas threatening and attacking humans: one man
is attacked and he runs away screaming and bloody (he then dies); another man's head is
thrown to a group of people and later we see the headless corpse (other bloody and
mutilated corpses are evident). A man has an eyeball drop into his hand. We see many
gorillas killed by guns and by a volcanic eruption.
PROFANITY 5 - One F-word, nine scatological terms, and a few milder
obscenities. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Safaris, natural disasters, killer gorillas, teaching animals
to communicate with humans, greed, technology, death.
MESSAGE - When humans mess with the natural order of things, everything goes
wrong.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
