Unlike the MPAA we do not assign
one
inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE
and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest,
depending on quantity and context.
A young boy discovers a Mafia secret which could get him
killed. He's also pursued by a U.S. Attorney (Tommy Lee Jones) while protected by an
attorney (Susan Sarandon).
SEX/NUDITY 0 - Just a couple of interested glances between Sarandon and
Jones.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - A man commits suicide by shooting himself in the head --
offscreen. A boy is thrown around roughly and ends up with a bloodied face. There are many
threats of death, and some scary scenes: A woman and a boy are threatened by a man with a
knife several times; a dead body is briefly shown with worms crawling from its head. A
raccoon is shot and its corpse is shown.

PROFANITY 3 - A lot of mild profanities, and scatological references. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - The legal system, obstruction of justice, the Mafia, suicide,
poverty, alcohol abuse.
MESSAGE - Even though life isn't fair, you should still play by the rules.
Being strong sometimes means you have to ask for help.
A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we
started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were
not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many
older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please
keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period.
While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are
limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process.
