ASSIGNED NUMBERS |
|
|
Unlike the MPAA we do not assign one inscrutable rating based on age, but 3 objective ratings for SEX/NUDITY, VIOLENCE/GORE and PROFANITY on a scale of 0 to 10, from lowest to highest, depending on quantity and context. |

The story is: Columbus convinces Queen Isabella, convinces
captains, convinces men, sails, faces mutiny from de-convinced men, finds New World just
in time, steals gold and natives and comes back triumphant. With Marlon Brando, Tom
Selleck, George Corraface and Rachel Ward.
SEX/NUDITY 6 - Some passionate kissing and fondling between Christopher
Columbus and the mother of his child. Native women are shown topless-a lot. Insinuation of
sex between Columbus' sea-men and native women.
VIOLENCE/GORE 4 - Scenes of dungeons with men shackled to the walls, sitting
in dirt and grime. Sounds of torture. Typical dark, brooding shots which depict the
inquisition. Men are taught a lesson for trying to thwart Columbus' efforts by being
dragged behind the ship and hung, by the hands, from a mast. One man is stabbed onboard
ship. Two men are killed during swordfights. One native man is stabbed. The crew which was
left behind on the island is massacred and left dangling to greet Columbus when he
returns. Two shark attacks-no gore, just bloody water.
PROFANITY 2 - No profanity. Some dated strong language. [profanity glossary]
DISCUSSION TOPICS - Inquisition, religious intolerance (especially toward Jews),
abuse of native Americans.
MESSAGE - Perseverance is good.

A CAVEAT: We've gone through several editorial changes since we started covering films in 1992 and some of our early standards were not as stringent as they are now. We therefore need to revisit many older reviews, especially those written prior to 1998 or so; please keep this in mind if you're consulting a review from that period. While we plan to revisit and correct older reviews our resources are limited and it is a slow, time-consuming process. |
